Germany lags significantly behind other European countries in the institutionalisation of artistic rese-arch (künstlerische Forschung) at higher education institutions for the arts and music (Kunst- und Musikhochschulen, KMHS). To provide a robust assessment of current developments, this report analyses the organisational structures of publicly funded KMHS based primarily on systematic web-site and do¬cument analyses. In doing so, it updates and extends the 2021 report of the German Sci-ence and Hu¬manities Council. The findings depict a field that is both heterogeneous and dynamic. Artistic research is already much more firmly embedded in master’s programmes than previously assumed. Research-related governance structures have been established at the majority of institutions, and opportunities for doctoral study are expanding rapidly. At the same time, however, actual doctoral pathways beyond established academic disciplines remain the exception. The study also identifies several structural challenges, particularly with regard to administrative capacities, the development of shared quality standards, and the establishment of cooperative doctoral formats. The findings suggest that the integration of artistic research should be conceived as a location-specific institutional ecosystem and that development strategies need to be adapted to the particular conditions of individual institutions. The report further identifies key research gaps – especially for higher education and science studies – to support future developments in the field.
